DIY Emergency Kit: Are you prepared?

I grew up in California so I am used to earthquakes. We had earthquake drills in school and I am pretty calm during the smaller ones we have had during the last few years. But if there is a big earthquake? Who knows what I would do! I think it's kind of crazy that I had no earthquake/emergency supplies in my apartment (I always have a flashlight and shoes by my bed-that's earthquake 101!). But that's not enough. I also thought about work and what I would do if there was an earthquake when I'm watching H.

I was inspired by stories from Sandy (the people with the backpacks that were ready to go) and two blog posts: Tea Time with Tess (a new Californian that was smart enough to get her kit ready soon after moving out here) and Three Bs: Books, Bottles, and Bags (Elise is a California native that made awesome kits for her previous nanny family).

**I highly recommend going to this FEMA site to get more information on what to include in a kit and how you can best prepare!  **

I made a small box for my apartment and an even bigger box for work. I decided to make my own (true shopaholic here) but you can easily find already complete emergency/earthquake kits online or in stores (Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc). Since I was preparing for earthquakes I filled a box because you don't usually leave (since there is no warning and it's often safer to stay inside under a table/desk/etc). BUT if you are preparing for a different kind of emergency (storm, fire, doomsday ;)  I recommend filling a large duffel or backpack so you can evacuate quickly.

On top of each box I taped a paper that lists the contents and any expiration dates (forgot to take a photo so just use your imagination). My box is still in progress (I need a better first aid kit, some canned vegetables/can opener, matches, candles, better flashlight, change of clothes, blanket). BUT my work box is complete (yay) and in their hall closet.

My box!
fruit snacks, cereal bars, raisins, peanut butter, breakfast/protein drinks
Water, lighters, mini first aid kit, poncho, gloves, toilet paper, contact lens solution, soap, pain medicine, feminine products, mini flashlight, batteries
the box fits perfectly in my linen closet outside my bedroom
The work box also includes extra stuff for H (small toys, crayons, wipes, change of clothes, diapers) and the dog (food and leash).

How have you prepared for emergencies? Do you have a kit?

This is not a sponsored post. I am just sharing how I organized supplies. I know it's random but I think it is very important to be prepared!

Nautical Photo of the Week: Preppy Sue at the Ocean House

This week I am featuring retired blogger Preppy Sue! Preppy Sue was one of the first blogs I ever read and I was able to meet Sue in New York for the Martha Stewart Lilly Pulitzer special.

Sue, her mom, and her daughter attended afternoon tea at the Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

The Ocean House has a fabulous fireplace with an anchor mounted above!
Sue's daughter looking pretty in pink!
Sue writes, "It's such a beautiful property and tea was lovely. Lucky for us, it's not far from my parents' home!"

5 Years! Thankful for my readers!

Last week was my 5 year blogversary (is that what it's called?). I wrote my very first blog post on November 12, 2007. I completely forgot to do a post last week on the 12th. But I think today is the perfect day to say thank you to all of my readers! I am thankful for every comment, email, follower, tweet, call and blog friend turned real life friend.

During the past five years you have gone all over the world with me: semester in Australia, Mediterranean cruise, trips to Kauai, Mexico, New York and beyond! You've been there for the not so fun too (cross country drive , my beloved lab's death, post-college unemployment and all my ranting about tough days with toddlers on twitter!). My readers are the BEST!

Happy Thanksgiving!

If you didn't take this survey last year please fill out a few questions so I can make my blog even better and a more enjoyable reading experience for my readers!

Nautical Photo of the Week: EAS Stardust Cruise

This week I am featuring EAS of Let the Tide Pull Your Dreams Ashore! I featured photos of Erin and her now fiance, JCW, at the Inn at Perry Cabin here and JCW in a nautical photo here.

EAS and JCW did a sunset cruise on the Stardust in Martha's Vineyard. The Stardust is docked at Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown. The Stardust is a wooden boat that was built in 1966.

Fun fact: Lindsay from Vineyard Loveknots actually got engaged aboard the Stardust last month!
