Destination Nautical: California

It is always hard to narrow down my long list of places I want to visit but I kept it at 6 spots again. Since all of these are in my current state I really have no excuse: time for a road trip!

Previous posts in this series include: Destination Nautical Traditional (mostly the northeast), Destination Nautical South and Destination Nautical Phuket, Thailand

1. Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina (San Diego)
From the website: "Located on San Diego Bay, enjoy the beautiful San Diego city skyline, bay and marina views at Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. We are just minutes from the historic Gaslamp District, Seaport Village, the San Diego Convention Center, the San Diego Zoo and many other great attractions."

2. The Cliffs Resort (Pismo Beach)
From the website: "Nestled halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, The Cliffs Resort is perched atop bluffs overlooking some of the world's most pristine beaches. Enjoy a Pismo Beach hotel unlike any other - inspired by, and in harmony with, its breathtaking ocean setting."

3. Argonaut Hotel (San Francisco)
From the website: "Located in the historic Haslett Warehouse, the Argonaut's home is a grand building built in 1907 of exposed brick, Douglas Fir beams and so much seaside character, you feel as though you can almost reach out and touch the colorful Barbary Coast past here."

4. Avila Lighthouse Suites (Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo County)
From the website: "Located just steps from the sand and surf of the Pacific Ocean in Avila Beach, Avila Lighthouse Suites is an all-suite luxury hotel offering world class service, comfortable and stylish guest suites and an unmatched location."

5. Shutters on the Beach (Santa Monica)
From the website: "Shutters on the Beach is a Santa Monica luxury hotel where you can look out your window and see there’s really nothing else to do today. A glass of wine, fresh oysters perhaps, a massage, maybe a nap. Shutters, where nothing stands between you and the sand." Note: I have been to the restaurant One Pico at Shutters but I have yet to stay the night in the hotel (staycation this spring?)

6. The Pierpont Inn (Ventura)
From the website: "The Historic Pierpont Inn was built in 1910 partly to accommodate the auto enthusiast traveling on the Pacific Coast Highway. Today, you will continue to find the Wyndham Garden Ventura Pierpont Inn surrounded by the lush landscaping, charming rooms and quaint cottages. Our hotel is known for its outdoor wedding ceremonies in the Rose Garden and the Ocean Bluff."

Have you stayed at any of these hotels?
I would love to hear your nautical travel recommendations! Been to a hotel with an amazing ocean view? Cute nautical decor? Please share in the comments!

  1. I have no inside hotel information but, wow, Shutter is GORGEOUS! With all the snow and cold that we've had on the East coast this winter, I'd happily pack for any of your picks!

  2. I have rode my bike by a few of these, I long to stay in Shutters on the Beach. Every time I visit California, I say I am going to but it hasn't happened. Another great hotel with awesome amenities and a wonderful view is Hotel del Coronado.

  4. I was hoping that we would get a chance to do a cross-country trip before we fly out to Hawaii in April, but it doesn't look like we are going to have time :( I was so excited about the thought of visiting Cali. At least Hawaii isn't too far!

  5. All of these look amazing, but I want to go to Shutters! My grandparents owned a hotel in West Palm Beach. I loved being able to walk out my door, through the sand dunes and play in the ocean. I haven't done a beach vacation since they sold the hotel, which was back in 2000. Sad.

  6. I would love to stay at any of these!! I'm actually thinking about booking a room at the Argonaut for my first SF trip early next year. It isn't cheap but the location is unbeatable and found a good price online at http://san-francisco.hotelscheap.org/. So maybe.... The Cliffs resort also looks great and I bet the view is amazing!
