If only

So I have written before about my (unrealistic and crazy) dream of being a celebrity nanny. Now of course I want to finish college and go into forensic psych and all that good stuff. BUT I would LOVE to spend a year or two doing this (this is an actual ad from a nanny agency in LA, my comments are bolded):

"We are an agency who has been hired by a Hollywood Power couple to help them find the BEST nanny (me DUH) for the infant. This couple is busy busy busy and we are helping them to find a true team player to help them look after their baby. They want to find someone who can really dedicate themselves to this position and become a part of their family.

Candidate must have a minimum of 4 years recent experience as a full charge, full time nanny (ok I don't have full time experience but I am not opposed to slave labor in this case). Experience with newborns is a must...any child development courses is also a bonus!!! We want to find to a creative, fun, energetic and responsible person to be a role model for this young adorable baby.

The parents are big on the Hollywood scene and need to find a caregiver who is savvy and poised and will not be flustered when in the presence of A listers (I won't be flustered, I'll just blog about it later ;) And I am totally A list anyway).

The most important part of this position is flexibility!! The parents live a lavish and exciting life and may jet away to Paris, an exotic Island or New York at a moments notice and want you to be able to come with them!(umm sign me up now!)

Because this is a High Profile position, you must have a clean background, valid CA driver's license, and impeccable references.

Schedule is on call...salary DOE, starting at $60k...up to $100k for the BEST!"

What's your dream job? And be totally honest!

  1. Ooooo my goodness gracious!! While I could not handle someone else's kids full-time, I can definitely see how that would be a dream job esp. for the traveling to "exotic" locales!! Love it!

Well, my dream job definitely would be to run a Lilly retailer. Sad but true! My bf and I joke all the time about how he is going to save up enough to buy me a franchise! But seriously, I love working in boutiques and to be surrounded by Lilly all day- what a dream! :P

  2. Ok...I don't want to crush your dream. Truly, I don't. But if you decide to pursue this, I am willing to give you my phone # to chat about some things first. My sorority best friend (Little) and I were nannies for very prominent families after college and let me just say it is not all its cracked up to be. There are perks- totally fun perks. But there are a LOT of downsides too. I'm serious- if you want tips on good questions to ask or just general stories I really will have a phone chat with you. It can be a good job but it is a lot like slave labor much of the time too. I hope I'm not hurting your feelings. Just want you to keep your eyes open to the reality of the situation.

  6. My dream job? J. Crew model.

I have wanted to do that since I was in college and all my friends would constantly comment that I looked like I just stepped out of a J. Crew magazine...

  7. I would love to be a doula. Since I can't have anymore of my own children and love babies and helping others this would be my dream job!

  8. As wonderful as this sounds, you need to be careful. These people are asking you to raise their child because it is inconvient with their social lives to do so. Also, on call is code for working 24 hours a day. The chef I worked with ym first year out of college had a duaghter who nannied for the Getty family and she could not have been more unhappy. Her boss was cruel to her, literally cruel and was never around for her children. She did everyhting for the two little ones and was promised trips to Europe yet never step foot outside of CA. I really do not want to crush your dreams, but I want to make sure you get the best possible fit. If you email me I can def fill you in more on this as I have a bit of experience myself. Also, you should check out the Heartland Agency. They always have wonderful postings and the families they list are checked out left and right as they are very strict about how people the refer are to be treated.

  10. you should just do it - apply - send your photo - do whatever it takes because now is the time to live your dreams!

I'd have to say I have a dream job right now - being able to work from home and be creative is all I've ever wanted to do. BUT... my absolute wish would be to be an event coordinator - I could never do it now with 2 young kids and when I am older I won't want to give up my weekends... it wasn't my dream job until it was too late!!

  11. I think you should apply for the job. Why not?

My dream job is to own a cute store. Maybe a paper store (similar to Paper Source), a girly gift shop, a boutique, or a little girl tea party room.

  15. A good friend of mine is a nanny for a celebrity couple, and she absolutely loves it! She's been doing it for three years now. Her college degree is in early childhood education, so she has the background that they wanted.

You should totally go for it! I would...just to see what would happen.

  16. kk hit it right on the nose--I want to be Samanatha Brown & go to all those fabulous places.

  17. Wow, that sounds very fabulous :) Good luck and hope you get the job!!

It seems as though this is the general consensus, but it would be a dream to own my own little cute boutique where I could sell anything from home accessories and furniture to clothing and jewelry. Someday?

  19. Oh Miss Nautical...

You know, I'm totally blessed because I am living the dream job right now doing the online store. And I'm am ever-so-grateful to be doing this!

I know yours will come, probably when you least expect and consider yourself least prepared. That could be before or after graduation from undergrad.

  20. My goodness - sounds good - like with all jobs, you can always give them a go and if they don't work, chalk it upt to experience and move on. Why not go for it? :) My dream job would be working on David Cameron's campaign for PM OR a chocolate taster OR a buying for Harrods OR anything with horses. I am easily pleased!!

  21. wow! that is amazing. the money sounds nice and the experiences would be unmatchable, but the horror stories are also out there. you could either go on to love or hate the Hollywood Power Couple.

anyway... my dream job would be to open up my own stationery shop here in south carolina and do full service wedding planning out of the shop.

  22. Oooh, that movie "The Nanny Diaries" was supposedly based on a true story! Yikes, it looked very stressful at times. But, it could turn out to be a dream job and if not, then you can always quit!
